News piece :D
Lecturer from Nanyang Technology University, Professer Chan Kap Luk, was busy at his computer preparing slides for a presentation when a student, Mr David Hartanto Widjaja, came into the room to discuss his Final Year Project. With his back towards Mr Widjaja, he asked questions and it was told that the student's replies were nervous and shaky. Then, Prof Chan felt something hitting his back. As he turned around, the student thrusted a knife at his face. He avoided it, and broke the knife's blade, but it left him with a deep cut on his right index finger. (Ouch.) It was continued with a violent fight, and Prof Chan finally got out and find his colleagues for first aid and an ambulance. It is believed that Prof Chan and Mr Widjaja were the only ones in the room. Mr Widjaja then jumped to his death after that.
Opinions : Research shows that most suicide cases were by students. Why is this so? The reason behind this might be that the student is under tremendous pressure and stress, and cannot cope with his studies. In this case, the student
might be in so much stress since it is his last year in University, and he is under pressure for his project, he decided to
relief his stress by taking it out on a Lecturer. In my opinion, this is not advisable. The student could either visit a counseller, or share it with someone.
Here are some ways to relieve stress : (http://depression.about.com/cs/stress/ht/Stress.htm)
1) When you feel stressed, practice taking long, deep breaths.
2) Take regular breaks from your work.
3) Get regular exercise. Shoot for a minimum of 20 minutes three times per week.
4) Eat a balanced diet.
5) Avoid caffeine, which is a stimulant.
6) Avoid depending upon drugs and alcohol to help you relax. This can quickly become a crutch.
7) Learn time management and organization skills.
8) Use humor to lighten difficult situations.
9) Seek to find the positive in every situation. View adversity as an opportunity for learning and growth.
10) Do not bury your emotions. This is a temporary fix at best. Unresolved emotions can resurface as nightmares or physical illness.
11) If you find that a relationship makes you stressed, end it. If that isn't possible, remember that you may not be in control their behavior, but you are in control of how you react to it.
12) Give compliments freely and smile often. You'll be amazed how the mood around you will change and how in turn you will feel better.
13) Learn to really listen to what others are saying rather than getting upset because you disagree. Seek to find areas of common ground and work for a compromise.
Tips:
Scented candles, soft music and a hot bath are great ways to relax after a hard day.
Many report that herbs such as valerian and kava kava help them relax. Be aware, however, that there have been rare case reports linking kava kava use to liver toxicity.
Meditation or biofeedback training can be an excellent way to control your body's response to stress. (okay, lol. sorry for long tip.)
I think it's also unfair to listen to the Professer's side of the story only as the student is not living to share his side. We might be able to get an explanation, and things will be clearer. No one will have misunderstandings, and no one will bear a grudge on anyone. Note to self : Suicide is not the solution to, ANYTHING.
